Welcome to hobosapient! Thanks for stopping by. 😀

I’m Erin. My boyfriend, Kevin, and I are recent college grads who are obsessed with travel, and have been putting together a master plan to make it happen for years.

Generally uninspired with our job prospects in the United States, and dying to get on the road, we moved home with the folks after graduation and started putting pennies away. We worked hard for about 5 months, taking every odd and part-time job that came our way. We also got TEFL certified, which was a hit to our already empty wallets and packed schedules. But we got through it.

We finally managed to come up with about $5K between us, which we deemed enough to buy tickets to China to start our next chapter as ESL teachers. By December 2011 we were on a plane to Chengdu with lofty ambitions use our TEFL jobs to travel all around China, pay our loans, save some money, and then take an epic round-the-world trip.

We didn’t know what to expect from teaching English, living abroad, or China, and we were definitely prepared for the worst. There are a lot of horror stories floating around about TEFL in Asia.

However, overall we had a great year and a great experience. There were ups and downs, but we traveled all over China, made some great friends, learned a ton about a culture we previously knew nothing about, and managed to put away a little money every month. And, I actually ended up loving my job, and am really sad that my time with my students is coming to an end.

Up next is a RTW trip, starting in March, that is still almost entirely up in the air. We’ll figure it out as we go, but the idea is to work, volunteer, and use some supreme budgeting skills to keep going for as long as possible! We are open to all kinds of different experiences, and pretty much willing to do whatever it takes to make our money, and thus travel time, stretch.

I’ve tried to write about every little detail that went into making this whole thing happen, but if you have any questions, please feel free to contact me! I’m happy to help anyone else make it happen.

As always, thanks so much for reading!

Love to you all. Xo.

We are envious as we would not have had the guts to take off to a foreign country. Gerald and I wish you both the best. We will check with you often to see how you are doing. What’s the weather like over in China we have about 6″ of snow on the ground and it has been as low as 6 below zero. We are headed down to Kansas City to see Byan, Sharon and their two girls Chloe and Ashley. Going on a limo ride around KC to see the lights and then dinner. Sunday back to Lincoln, NE to see Lara’s oldest in his first church christmas program. Love Us
